The Dead Sea Scrolls
'Just Stories?' #29
What's in the series? Previous: The Earliest Fragment Next: The Isaiah Scroll
In 1947, Bedouin shepherd boys accidentally discovered the first of the Dead Sea Scroll caves. These are caves where a Jewish community living at Qumran hid their precious scrolls from the Romans. In 70AD the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, and carried out a great persecution of the Jewish people. These scrolls were hidden in such a perfect environment that they would be kept for nearly two thousand years.
These manuscripts include almost every book of the Old Testament. This means we can read the Old Testament as it was at the time of Jesus. We can demonstrate that there has been faithful copying for two thousand years.
