Naturally Religious?

(Beyond Ourselves #33)

What's in the series?      Previous: A Natural Explanation?       Next: Can we trust what we think?

If there is nothing but the physical world, why should we have a sense of spiritual reality?

Human spirituality is difficult to explain if we are just atoms and molecules. But it is less surprising if there really is a God who made us.

We have been talking about attempts to find a scientific explanation for our spirituality. And surely, if we can explain it naturally, we do not need to bring God into the picture?

But isn’t it possible that our spirituality developed naturally, but still points to something real? (Just as maybe our eyesight developed naturally, but it still helps us to see real things in the world around us.)

In the same way, maybe our spiritual nature developed naturally. But isn’t it also possible that we are spiritual people because there really is a God who has designed us to recognise his activity in the world?

‘Although I was once sharply critical of the argument to design, I have since to come to see that, when correctly formulated, this argument constitutes a persuasive case for the existence of God.’ – Professor Anthony Flew
