What's in the series? Previous: Who was W J Bryan? Next: A Conflict between Christians
The Scopes trial in Dayton Tennessee in 1925 started as a publicity stunt by the town’s businessmen. It went wrong when the national media seized on the story. Once the story went viral, everyone wanted to get in on the act. A controversial lawyer seized the initiative for defending Scopes. That lawyer was Clarence Darrow. Darrow was the most famous lawyer in the country at the time. He was well known as a speaker, writer, and a ‘village atheist’ on a national scale.
With Professor Edward J Larson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 'Summer for the Gods: the Scopes Trial and America’s Continuing Debate over Science and Religion,' and the Hugh & Hazel Darling Professor of Law at Pepperdine University, USA.
