God and the Big Bang
What's in the series?
(1) How the universe began - the moment of creation
Many people think that science and faith tell conflicting stories about how the universe began. But the scientific picture is of a definite moment of creation in a vast cosmic explosion (the 'Big Bang'), which had to be carefully adjusted for human life to be possible. Far from conflicting, the scientific picture points towards a supernatural creator God.
(2) The evidence that the universe had a beginning
Second in this series of eight videos featuring astronomers and physicists who accept the scientific account of the Big Bang, and who also believe in a God who created us.
(3) The relationship between science and faith
In this video scientists who are Christian believers talk about how they see the relationship between science and their faith in God, especially as it relates to how the universe began.
(4) Is fine tuning in the Big Bang evidence for God?
There had to be fine tuning for life in the Big Bang - it had to happen in a very precise way so that we could be here today. Most kinds of Big Bang would only have produced a Universe filled with clouds of hydrogen, or with black holes. Is this fine tuning evidence of God?
(5) Unsolved mysteries
Although scientists are confident in the general picture of the Big Bang, many unsolved mysteries remain. One of these is about the nature and strength of the dark energy which appears to be driving the universe apart. This is fine tuned for life: if it was just a little more than it is, we would not be here.
(6) Scientists who are Christians talk about God and the Big Bang
In this video scientists who are Christian believers talk about how they see the relationship between God and the Big Bang.
(7) More about the contributors
More about the contributors to the ‘God and the Big Bang’ videos: These videos feature astronomers and physicists who accept the scientific account of the Big Bang, and who also believe in a God who created us.
(8) How old is the universe?
How old is the universe? The scientific evidence points to the Universe having a definite moment of creation, in an intense fireball, fourteen billion years ago. For the astronomers and physicists we’ve been talking to in these programmes, there isn’t any conflict between this scientific evidence and their faith in God. One of the biggest points of tension is that the Bible seems to say the world was made in six days, and the scientific evidence says it took fourteen billion years. In this video we ask how they solve this difficulty.
