The Year Jesus was Born

(Unwrapped: the Truth about Christmas #29)

What's in the series?      Previous: Different lists of Ancestors?       Next: Born on 25th December?

Jesus was born in about 5 BC! How did we get the year of his birth wrong?

In 525 A.D, the Pope asked an Italian mathematician and historian called Dennis the Little to identify the year when Jesus was born. This is how our calendar based on B.C and A.D started. But the evidence available to Dennis was limited, and he got the date wrong by about five years.

But this does not support the sceptics' claim that Jesus was not a real person. There is a bigger point here, which we can easily miss:

How likely is it that we base our calendar on someone who never really lived? Jesus was a real person, and he really was born sometime between 6 B.C and 4 B.C.
