Too much to explain away?
(Beyond Ourselves #35)
What's in the series? Previous: Can we trust what we think?
In this series, we have asked whether there are things about human nature which we can not explain if we are just atoms and molecules, but which make sense if we have been made in the image of God.
- Consciousness: the scientific description of our brains can not account for our personal experience of thinking about things, and of having beliefs that can be true or false.
- Rationality: if we are just atoms and molecules, we do not have any reason to trust any of our beliefs – including the belief that we are just atoms and molecules.
- Morality: everyone in the world has a built in sense of right and wrong. But we can not explain this if we are just atoms and molecules.
- Spirituality: we have a built in tendency to believe in a God or gods, and to see design and purpose in the world. Yet again, it is very hard to explain this if we are just atoms and molecules.
Consciousness, rationality, morality and spirituality: is there too much about human nature that naturalism cannot explain, but can only explain away? Is it time to explore the alternative – that we have been made by God, to know Him and be known by Him?
